The movie that I watched and annotated this week is Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith(2005), whose directer is George Lucas and leading actors are Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen. When it was first released in 2005, its worldwide gross reached $849 million, which makes it the second most financially successful film in 2005. The film got an average rating of 7.3/10. I also read some reviews of the film. In Peter Bradshaw's review in the Guardian, he criticizes the movie for lacking "a spark of real dramatic life". In Mike LaSalle's review 'Revenge of the Sith' Review: Does George Lucas know how good a movie he almost made, Mike LaSalle thinks that the movie is the best in the trilogy yet it also contains the faults in previous movies.
The major women character in the film, Padme, performs a gender role that falls into traditional stereotypes of women. The main storyline of the movie is how Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker became the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Padme is an important character that catalyze the transformation of Anakin. Anakin once had a bad dream that Padme would die of pregnancy. Along with his discontent with Jedi Master council's bureaucracy, he decided to embrace the dark side of the force. Throughout the movie, Padme is portrayed someone's romantic lover and always perform a passive role. She is not able to bring a positive change to the situation, instead, her appearance in Mustafar made the situation even worse(01:39:30). Obviously, in today's feminist critic's view, the gender role represented by Padme is far more from today's standard of women.
Generally speaking, in later Disney films, female characters play a much more active role than Padme does.
