Week 5 Extra Credit Assignment: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The movie that I watched and annotated this week is Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens(2015), whose directer is J.J.Abrams and leading actors are Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley. The main storyline of the movie is the war between the Resistance and the successor of the Galactic Empire, the First Order. When it was released in 2015, the film got an average rating of 8.20/10 in the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. I also read some reviews of the film. In Matt Seitz's review, he wrote that the new faces appeared in the screen are "as compelling as the familiar ones". In Manohla Dargis' review '‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Delivers the Thrills, With a Touch of Humanity", Manohla Dargis thinks that the director presented the story in a "old-fashioned escapism".

The major women character of the film, Rey Skywalker, is a milestone character in Star Wars series. In previous Star Wars movies, the major female characters (like Leia Organa and Padme Amidala) could be regarded as fighters in some sense. But they are not totally independent of men. The role that Rey displayed in the film is more similar to male protagonists(like Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi) in previous film. Rey's story is the story of a determined fighter, instead of the story of a romantic character. One of my most impressive scene of the movie is the fight between Rey and the villain, Kylo Ren. In this scene Rey shows great level of bravery and determination, through which she proved that such characteristics not only belongs to men, sometimes women could even do better than male heroes.

Throughout the movie, I think the gender role represented by Rey Skywalker is pretty similar to the gender roles of the female superheroes in the Avengers series. They all play the roles as courageous warriors.
