Discussing Disney: Mulan
Discussing Disney: Mulan is a podcast that mainly focuses on how Mulan changed the gender roles in China and all over the world. In the podcast, two speakers, Hannah and Lindsay, first introduced the background of the story: Mulan was adopted from an ancient Chinese ballad and there is no evidence that Mulan is a real historical figure. Then the speakers utilize specific moments from the film to illustrate the gender stereotypes of women in ancient China and how Mulan is able to challenge and change them. This podcast is a great reference to my podcast because Mulan is one of the films that I am going to talk about for this project. Two speakers provide many detailed analyzation of the plot of the movie, for example, when they talk about the scene that Mulan receives training in the army camp, they conclude that "she was able to prove that, as a female you could get stronger, be brave and fight in war just like men could.”
Looking into the Magic Mirror: Disney’s Impact on the Fairy Tale Genre
The second source that I am going to use is the article Looking into the Magic Mirror: Disney’s Impact on the Fairy Tale Genre" by Linda Haas and Shaina Trapedo. The article provides a detailed overview on the development of Disney Fairytales and their impact on the industry as well as the society. Haas&Trapedo also mentioned the gender value conveyed by Disney princesses in different times--"Disney’s fairy tale princess has been transformed from domesticated object of desire to independent ingénue". This article is a very useful reference because one of the main points of my podcast would be the comparison between early Disney princesses and today's Disney princesses.
Disney’s Female Gender Roles: The Change of Modern Culture
The third source that I am going to refer is thesis Disney’s Female Gender Roles: The Change of Modern Culture by McKenzie Barber. This is such a long essay so I will summarize the point that I am going to talk about in my podcast. In the essay, the author introduces the society's perceptions in different era. From 1989 to 2010, an era that is described as a rebellious and ambitious era, the Disney princesses seek for their own freedom and gender roles. From 2011 to present, the gender role represented by women characters are more "independent and free-spirited". I found this source helpful because I am going to cover the part about the gender roles of today's Disney princesses in the podcast. This thesis analyzed Disney films in different era and connected them to cultural perception on women of the time , which perfectly fit in my arguments.
